Have Respect For Your Team and Manage Your Calendar Properly

Do you manage your calendar or does it manage you?

Do you manage your calendar or does it manage you?

Managing your calendar isn't always easy in the best of times. Things are constantly changing and sometimes we run late, etc. And when working from home, we have the luxury of sometimes falling down a rabbit's hole, getting caught up in a phone call or even just getting into the flow on a project.

But it is always important to have respect for those you are meeting with, either in-person or virutally. If you are properly managing your calendar, you can see if you have yourself double-booked. And if you have standing meetings that you intend to keep, don't book another appointment at the same time. With our calendars now on our phones and computers, there is no excuse for double-booking. And if you HAVE to book something at a certain time and there is a conflict, take the time right then and there to reschedule or cancel the first appointment.

I have a client who, twice just today, had basically no-shows. The first was a standing weekly meeting. The organizer has it at the same time every week. Yet it was not until 30 minutes before the call was to start that they notified people that they had a conflict. And this conflict was one that this person scheduled directly. And one could argue that at least they let them know at all. But if you knew first thing this morning, then you knew last night. And they could have let the team know.

The second situation is similar, but even worse. Standing afternoon meeting, every two weeks. The manager hasn't communicated with the team one way or the other for three of those meetings, and they didn't occur. So you have team members gathered, ready for their meeting, only to find out it isn't happening. And once, the manager was on vacation, but failed to let anyone know.

This may seem like a little thing, but it really shows a lack of respect for your team. Respect them enough to let them know of schedule changes, so they can properly manage their schedules. It's just the decent thing to do.
